Factors Affecting Garage Doors Prices

03/08/2015 Back To Blog

As garage doors aid in ensuring your home and family’s safety, it has become a common thing for homeowners to add garages as part of their home’s layout. With this comes the need to purchase garage doors. Coming in a myriad of styles, designs and materials, garage doors in the market make it difficult for first time homeowners to purchase a new door. But the most important thing you should consider before buying a door would be the price.  In fact the price is the first thing you should look at. So if you are looking to buy a new garage door, it is best to note the factors that would affect garage door prices:

Material Being Used

Prices would vary depending on the material being used. The commonly used materials are steel, aluminum, timber and fiberglass. For doors made of timber, you can have a choice between the commonly used ones such as those made from oak, larch and hemlock. Timber doors are usually more costly compared to steel doors, because of the cost of the raw material and the process by which they are made into garage doors. Another indication of the price would be based on the size of the garage door. Bigger doors would need more material, therefore cost more.

If you are on a budget, it would be good to look at doors made of a steel or aluminum frame. Steel doors are known for being able to last long, while aluminum doors are used mostly as insulated roller doors. But if you want one with a wood finish, you can get one in aluminum with a laminated finish that gives off a wooden rustic look. But if budget is not much of an issue, it is best to invest in one made of timber that is extremely sturdy. That way you can expect the door to last for a very long time. Make sure that you check the regulations in your area as certain materials are best used for different localities. Say if you are living in a coastal area, steel doors are not best used, as they tend to corrode when exposed to saltwater. The same applies to glass garage doors. If you live in a place that constantly suffers from hurricanes, then glass is definitely out of the question.

Mechanism of the Doors
The garage door’s mechanism plays a huge role in the cost of the garage doors. Say a one-piece door that works up and over would be less costly as compared to one that is boarded around the corner. The operating mechanism for garage doors would mainly depend on the space that is available outside and inside your garage area. Narrow garages that have limited space at the entrance would be better off with a roller door, rather than a one-piece door. Garages that have low ceilings work better with side-hinged doors as compared to sectional doors.

Take all these things into consideration when picking out a door as they are all closely linked to the cost of the doors. But always make sure that although price might be a determinant, it should not be the deal breaker, as you want a door that will keep you safe and secure.  Also take into consideration the model and the kind of garage door repair service you will get in the future. All these factors would mesh together for you to make a good decision.
